Echoes of Home is an experimental project by Max that explores personal memories and emotions, developed as part of a validation experiment for the Royal College of Art (RCA). The work uses a fountain as a medium, blending natural and industrial elements to highlight the tension and balance between the two. Max created a low-cost fountain by assembling simple materials, including a basic water pump, disposable cups, lever rods, wire mesh, straps, and scented candle holders repurposed as spacers. During the process, he repeatedly adjusted the capacity and angle of the cups to establish a delicate equilibrium within the system. Fine-tuning the water flow and speed was also critical to achieving a stable operation while preserving the natural dynamics of the water.
The sound of the running water evoked Max's memories of his hometown, specifically the cooling towers of a factory near the village, where the sound of cascading water was both industrial and natural. To enhance the sensory experience, the project integrates a screen displaying footage of a flowing stream. The audio of the video was muted, allowing the sound of the fountain itself to become the auditory focus. This combination of natural imagery and authentic water sounds creates a surreal yet tangible experience, reflecting the intricate relationship and tension between industrial and natural worlds.
