Project Overview
The One Tool One Stool project is a design brief from the Royal College of Art (RCA), challenging students to create a functional stool using a single tool. The project comes with strict constraints: no use of nails, glue, or other adhesives, and the final product must be approximately 40 centimetres tall and strong enough to support the weight of an average adult. By limiting the tools and focusing on simplicity, the project challenges conventional design processes and highlights the interplay between constraints and creativity.
For the One Tool One Stool project, I chose a handheld angle grinder as my sole tool and wire along with wire mesh as the primary materials. The constraints of the project required me to ensure both structural stability and load-bearing capacity while achieving a balance between aesthetics and functionality. In particular, I aimed to challenge the load-bearing capabilities of the wire mesh and fully explore the material's plasticity. Ultimately, the design was realised through the twisting and fixing of wires.
